Find out what we thought about playing Through the Breach for the first time! And whether Mim, Korban, Rufus or our Fate Master will come back for more... If you're interested in checking out Through…
So we started off, and Joseph, you took us through the process of the character creation, which I only vaguely remember at this point, but it was quite a bit different than our normal D&D setup in many ways.
So I guess what did everyone think about the whole process of just starting out, having never played this before?
I thought...
It was, in looking at it, very intimidating, to be honest, because it was so many different skill descriptions and how many skills you got as just a very basic character creation.
When I read through it was like, oh my gosh, this is terrifying.
But once you actually go through the process, it really makes sense.
The skills that you get and the flexibility you have to kind of swap some of them for their different values and the fact that some of your skills are historical some of them are trained skills that you got later in life i got to shape in my mind rufus as we were building the character and then bolster that idea once i had a little bit of a you know idea of kind of his meat and potatoes brain and no poutine joke intended and Then stack on some additional skills that fit the backstory narrative that it kind of formulated through the process.
So just looking at the book, I was stymied, but the actual process of doing it, I really enjoyed.
What
about you, Dicey? One of the things I really liked about it was the distribution of skills where we had kind of essentially your almost backstory skills.
And then you had like kind of your chosen skills based off of kind of who you were currently.
I also liked that you got to... kind of think about your character's background a little bit or like who you wanted your character to be I feel like a lot of times we see kind of references to that like in specifically in the D&D system you'll see like specific equipment kits or backgrounds that will give you items but they don't necessarily always give you meaningful skill changes and so I did really like that piece of it as like kind of building up to a character In fact, I think I even edited my character slightly after we finished the process to kind of better fit the backstory I wanted.
But yes, the book was originally very intimidating, but Joseph did an excellent job of guiding us through the process.
yeah that's for sure because i definitely would have struggled with this on my own and you just took us through it and you know one session zero got us all set up and then we could take it from there so uh you did a great job on leading us through that and then like after the fact having a little time to digest like daisy said and going back to refine and now having a better understanding of all the things we were doing as far as building the character and the choices we could make, being able to go and spend time now kind of navigating that on our own.
So you did a great job, I just would say, setting us up for success on that one.
Well, thanks.
It is a fun character system.
It's true.
When you look at that book the first time, all the different charts for each of the different phases of creation are daunting sometimes.
But the step-by-step instructions in the chapter itself do kind of point you in the right direction, and it gets to be a little bit more intuitive once you've done it once or twice.
Yeah, I think at one point you said something like, oh, we don't do that until step 11.
Yeah.
