Somewhere in Time Lenara's eyes snapped open.
She jerked upright, her skin damp with sweat.
In her chest, her heart pounded against her flesh.
Hello?
She rasped, squinting as she peered into the darkness surrounding her.

Reaching to her face, she touched and prodded at her cheek, though the room she was in was so dark she could not see her hands.
Gradually, she lowered them to her breast, where she felt her heartbeat.
When she drew a long breath through her nose, she felt her lungs fill with air, and when she released, a slow thumping of her heart steadied her.
"'Hello?' she called out.
"'Is anyone there?' She was alone, alone in the dark." Tears unbidden welled in her eyes as painful memories attacked her from all sides.
The ruins of Hastarl, Ronan's shouts of anguish, the feeling of Joris struggling beneath her grip, choking as her blood whip tightened around his neck.
The look in Ronan's eyes as she turned her back and left him behind.
Lenara fell slowly onto her side and pulled her knees up to her chest, shrinking into a ball.
There, she wept.
"'Sorry.
I'm sorry.'
She repeated until her voice offered no volume, and her eyes stung without tears to give.
