Crime, or fear of crime, is a huge issue around the world, and it's building in Australia.
Dr. Xanthe Weston is a criminologist, associate professor at Central Queensland University, one of Australia's leading experts in crime.
Well, that's, that's a great big question, isn't it? In terms of is there always going to be crime, the answer's yes.
People are always going to be violent, and people are always going to take advantage of other people.
But there are certainly things we can do to reduce the risk of crime, to mitigate those costs to individuals in the community.
But we do seem to have entered this era where a different level of crime, um, particularly juvenile crime.
Kids who steal hubcaps, now they'll, uh, they're likely to commit an aggravated burglary.
Um, people becoming quite disenfranchised, especially young people living a lot of their lives online, and it, they almost seem to separate from the rest of society.
And I think we're now seeing a reflection of that, 'cause what we saw at the same time was the increase with online activity.
