We're just 10 days out from the South Carolina opener, and in this episode Joe breaks down his preseason routine to make sure he's dialed in and ready for opening day. Joe walks through the bow…
I think probably one of the most important things, if you don't have your place kind of dialed and where you're going to hunt this year, I mean, obviously you've still got time to find that, and every now and again you get a new spot.
But what I am focusing on now is – the reps of of shooting because that's a controllable and i want to be as lethal with my equipment as i possibly can i think you really need to make sure right now that your bow is completely tuned and ready to go with your hunting setup your arrows are dialed your broadheads are dialed your bow setup is dialed the release the sight if you're using a sight tape man you've got to have all that done and you've got to do that now if it's not already done You've got to get the bow completely tuned, completely ready for hunting season.
And if that is already done, now it is time to get away from the casual shooting in the backyard and to get into real-world practice shooting at deer targets, not at round dot targets.
That's a really good drill to keep you from getting into target panic, especially when you transition from shooting dots into shooting 3D targets and actual deer targets.
And for the guys that haven't heard the podcast about shooting drills that I do, the dot drill is where I will get in – seven to five yards away from a target and I'll have golf tees or little small dots on that target and it takes all the pressure of aiming out of the equation and I'll put my pin right on that dot And there is no panic because it's so close.
And I'll do that over and over and over again just to keep that target panic out of my head and to keep the shot execution, that muscle memory, over and over and over again.
aim, anchor, or anchor, aim, execute, anchor, aim, execute, and execute, meaning pull, pull, pull, to pull through the shot.
This year I'm going to be doing, as the last podcast we had Bobby Worthington on and talked about doing a lot of trad shooting, so I'm obviously going to be working a lot on my traditional shooting strategy.
And what I like to do if I am on a flat range is have a target very close to me that I can mix in the dot shooting with the 3D shooting.
And what you can do is have a target set up at five yards with your little golf tees pushed into it or little dots.
And then I'll have my 3D targets out at normal hunting ranges, you know, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 yards, however far you plan on shooting.
And then, you know, we'll take a couple shots at – the 30-yard target, if you will, the 20-yard target, mix them up.
But then I'll come right back to that dot, and I'll execute two or three shots at the dot.
And that really, really helps me, and I think it'll help a lot of guys just with executing that shot.
I know it's effort, right? I said it before that I'm very lucky or fortunate that I've got an elevated tower here at the office so I can sneak out at lunch or before work or after work and get some elevated shots in.
And so if you've got a tree in your backyard, you can put a ladder stand up in or you can shoot out of a second story window or whatever.
