Governor Kathy Hochul joined congressional members Pat Ryan and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with other elected officials at Fishkill Farm yesterday afternoon.
Several months ago, near the sprawling Fishkill Farm, an entity considered building a 100-megawatt data center on a piece of land.
Prompted by concerned citizens, the town of East Fishkill enacted a moratorium on data centers in the town, slowing
the company's consideration of the venture.
Shortly after, Governor Hochul enacted a statewide moratorium, the first in the nation, on data centers to allow the impacts to be studied.
Now for up to one year, we're pausing new environmental permits as we build the strongest framework in the nation for responsible data center development.
What that means? Protecting our energy grid, our environment, and the communities where these facilities want to be built.
It also means making sure that New Yorkers are not stuck with higher utility bills and making sure this industry pays its fair share.
And one thing it means above all, data centers will only go in communities that want them.
Congressman Ryan said the data center issue transcends all the country's current divides.
