Sleep well and enjoy the tale of the Dunmer. From ash and ruin, they endured. From their ancient Chimer origins, to the age of Nerevar, the rise of the Tribunal, and the catastrophic events that…
The history of the Dunmer begins with the Chimer, a race of elves with pale golden skin who follow the prophet Veloth from Somerset Isle to the land of Restain, known today as Morrowind, all in search of religious freedom.
Their ancestors, the Aldmer, had long practiced ancestor worship, honoring those who came before them as the foundation of their beliefs.
Over time, however, Aldmeri society became increasingly divided by class, and those divisions gradually shaped their religion.
The ancestor spirits of the ruling classes gained greater prominence until they were elevated into gods.
Auriel, once revered as the ancestor of the nobility alone, eventually came to be claimed as the common ancestor of all Altmer.
Among those who rejected these changes were the Myrrh who would become the Psijic Order.
Known as the Keepers of the Old Ways of Aldmeris, they maintained that every divine force ultimately traced its origin to ancestor spirits, believing that even the Aedra and Daedra were simply the souls of extraordinary mortals who had attained immense power after death.
Their decision to settle upon the island of Artaeum marked the first major departure from Somerset, and before long a broader migration followed, as many among the lower classes departed as well.
Among those who left were the people who came to be known as the Chimer, also remembered as the Velothi, a name preserved by the Ashlanders for generations to come.
