[musical interlude] The New York Times headlined a June 17th story, "A Jewish Democrat's Support of Israel May Cost Him His NYC House Seat." The story was about congressional incumbent Dan Goldman running in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan, where he is being challenged by opponent Brad Lander, including over his stance on the war in Gaza.
Goldman's stance is that he supports Israel's violent ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and continued US taxpayer funding of it.
He refuses to call the slaughter in Gaza a genocide or even to call the Israeli seizure of Palestinian territory an occupation.
Lander, who like Goldman, is Jewish, does call the genocide a genocide and supports a halt to US military aid to Israel.
His stance is credited with contributing to his widespread support in the district, where the latest polling puts him up by 34 points.
The Times framing this story as a Jewish Democrat potentially losing a seat over his support for Israel is odd and divisive.
As FAIR's Jim Naureckas pointed out, the Times could just as easily have headlined the story, "A Jewish Democrat's Criticism of Israel May Help Him Win an NYC House Seat." You're listening to Counterspin, brought to you each week by the Media Watch group FAIR.
