A folktale from Chile about an old woman who is given the magical child of a sea spirit to look after for a short while, but when it comes time for her to retun the child to her mother, the old woman…
She spent her days collecting driftwood for her fire and searching the rock pools for shrimps and fish to eat.
Next morning, the old woman found an enormous crab lying at the water's edge.
She carried it home expecting to enjoy a delicious meal, but when she put the crab on the table...
The shell fell open and there inside lay a baby with a glittering, vicious tail.
But how shall I look after a child of the sea? She took the baby to a wise woman who lived nearby to ask for advice.
She must have been put in this crab shell for protection during the storm, to save her from the fierce sea wolves beneath the waves.
I will keep her safe, she said, but how should I look after her? The wise woman told her to put the cradle among the rocks near the water.
The old woman carried the crab shell to the shore, rocking the baby to sleep as she went.
She rose out of the water with glistening black hair and skin gleaming like pearl and she swam over to her child.
Seeing that the pinkoya was not to be feared, the old woman stepped out from her hiding place.
She is too small to swim yet, so I hid her in the crab shell to keep her safe from the sea wolves.
