[gentle music] Let's take a journey with the little red fish and the golden slipper.
[gentle music] A fisherman lived with his daughter, Munira, on the banks of the Tigris River.
She washed their clothes, baked bread, and cleaned the fish they caught for supper.
"Father," Munira asked one day, "why won't you marry our neighbor? That way I can have a mother again, and now a sister, and you'll have someone to take care of you." "I fear that if I marry your stepmother, she will come to resent you and be jealous of you." Munira would not back down.
In the beginning, they were happy, but soon the woman began to compare Munira to her own daughter.
While the fisherman was out on the river, she kept most of the food for herself and her daughter, leaving Munira with little to eat.
One day, as Munira carried a basket of fish home from the riverbank, she heard a tiny voice.
Throw me back into the water, for you're the best of daughters." Munira almost dropped the basket when she saw the little red fish peeking out, but she ran back to the water and slid the fish back into the river.
The fish popped its head out of the water and said, [water splashes] "Call on me when you need a friend, and my help I will send to you." When Munira got home, she told everyone about the little red fish she returned to the water.
"No problem," said her father, "it wasn't a very big fish." Her stepmother waited until he fell asleep before grabbing Munira by the ear.
You go back and catch that fish." [gentle music] In the darkness, Munira made her way back to the river.
[chimes ring] The stepmother was pleased with the shiny coin, but still she resented Munira.
