The Two Johns: Tapping into the coming infrastructure boom

[upbeat music] John, let's start with, uh, with part one, infrastructure.

This is the subject of the, the column, uh, in Investors Chronicle on the website, um, this, this, uh, month.

Why is it so interesting? Let's, let's, let's just start with the big picture.

Well, big, very big picture, John, is that it, it, it used to be considered very dull.

You know, utilities and so forth.

But it's becoming a lot more interesting-

... simply because, um, uh, it's aging to the point of obsolescence.

It's as simple as that.

Um, the demands on it are growing significantly.

It's, uh, the problem is, is particularly with the grid, it was a, it was a, uh, you know, is that the physical grid was not designed for the modern world.

Uh, originally designed, the network, that is, to move power from large coal plants from the north typically in this country down to the south to light houses and streets in the, in the midwinter.

Mm.

But now it's got so much greater demands on it, that grid, a- and it's not just a UK phenomenon, it's a global phenomenon.

So it's becoming in- interesting from an in- an investment point of view, as we'll discuss.

Yes, indeed.

Uh, I mean, you, you mentioned there sort of moving power from the, the coal fire plants of the north to the-

Mm

... to the homes of, of the south.

Um, n- now it sort of seems a bit, bit to be about getting, getting power onshore from the, the, the, the huge wind farms that are everywhere.

This is another, another highlight of the Suffolk coast-

... all the, uh, the, the cables-

Mm

... that are gonna be coming onshore from, from these farms.
