Pastor Banning Liebscher continues teaching on generosity, challenging us to move from giving out of obligation or pressure to giving from a revelation of God’s love and goodness. A cheerful giver is…
Banning LiebscherHostWe've been in a series that's gonna probably be a multi-year series, [laughs] uh, uh, called To All the Saints.
We've been diving into the letters of Paul, really inviting our church to engage scripture at a deeper level, not just to skim it or to engage it in a shallow way, understand context, to understand who, uh, the scripture's written to and the culture and all that type of stuff.
But I felt a stirring recently just to take a quick pause and, uh, begin to talk about generosity.
I'll, I'll speak for a few more weeks probably on this, but the main passage that we've, um, been tackling has been Paul's letter, second letter to the Corinthians, to the church in Corinth.
So if you have your Bibles, I want you to go there, 2 Corinthians chapter 9.
Uh, maybe the most popular passage when it comes to the concept of sowing and reaping.
And, um, and again, Paul, when he's writing to the Corinthians here, this is in the context of finances.
And we're gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna pastor you in a moment around this issue and kinda what it brings up sometimes.
And so 2 Corinthians chapter 9 verse 6, he just says, "Remember this." Can I just pause real quick? I don't wanna preach every single verse, every single word in this, in this verse, but I want you to circle that because I mentioned this la- a couple weeks ago.
When Paul says, "Remember this," it's very important to understand that as believers, we seem to forget things that we already know.
I, I've been faithfully going after God for 33 years, sitting in church, actively listening and wanting to grow, taking notes, and it's amazing to me still, 33 years later, how somebody will get up and preach something that I've heard preached often, I know the passage, and I still remember, "Oh, I forgot.
Okay, I gotta get..." So, so Paul's writing, he's saying, "Listen, you need to remember this.
You need to remember this." Especially there are certain things that are foundational.
He says this: "Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously." Now, this is the verse.
