Rethinking families as powerful tribes

The Islamic definition of the man being the head of the household, you know, they have a whole different definition of what the family should look like.

When we look at families in Islam, You're looking at tribes.

We're looking at units of power, right? A family in Islam is meant to be a very powerful thing.

You've got your tribal chief.

You've got all his sons and daughters.

You've got all his son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws, all his grandchildren, and they are united, right? All of the cousins are united.

They are there for each other.

When families are strong like that, if the government, for example, wishes to oppress a single member of that family, other members of the family will intervene.

There may be lawyers in the family.

There may be politicians in the family.

There may be influential people in the family.

Everybody has each other's backs.

You make the family smaller.

Now we just have husband, wife, and kids.

They're much easier to control, much easier to oppress.

Now you make it even smaller.

It's just, as you said earlier, that lady with her cats.
