This episode we return to our new Board Games Hall of Fame feature, where we add two games to the Hall of Fame that we feel have changed the hobby and have an impact that is still felt today. If you'd…
Uh, our first game this time out is the Castles of Burgundy from Stefan Feld, and which was originally published back, uh, uh, in the olden days by Ravensburger.
Uh, you may be more familiar with this game from the more recent 2019 reimplementation or the mega 2023 special edition version from Awaken Realms, but this all began back in the heady days of 2011 with a much more plain version.
Uh, but you still had all the mechanics of this wonderful game, uh, kinda set in stone.
So it was all, it was all there at that point.
It's probably in there somewhere, but I haven't seen it, of exactly what it, what, uh, period it's talking about.
Uh, and you're doing this by rolling dice, and this is probably a good place to start the discussion.
Uh, it is such an easy game to play, right? It is just roll a dice, do a thing.
Disagree.
Okay.
Uh, never-
Counterpoint
... never have the right dice.
[laughs] You still roll the dice.
[laughs]
Still, still roll the dice, but I can't do the thing.
I challenge you-
Yeah
... on a first round of b- of Burgundy to not be able to do anything with any of the dice you've got available.
Yeah.
No, absolutely can't.
Um, yeah, it's, it is, as you say, super simple.
It's a really good game to teach because you can just kind of start with, "Let's roll our dice," and, and, and just kinda teach as you go and build, build from there.
And, um, you know, there, there is some complication in it, right? In, and it was one of the things that actually with the later versions it has got better, and we might talk about that a little bit.
But, but the, the different buildings that you've got can get maybe a little bit complicated as to what they're all about.
