Angela Avery is a school counselor and department leader at Sanford Middle School in Southern Maine.

She is an adjunct faculty member teaching school counseling graduate students at the University of Southern Maine.

She has been proactively working to prevent suicide for many years through her career.

Welcome, Angela, and thank you for joining me today as we record on-site at our ASCA annual conference.

Since we are doing a live session at the conference, I guess share a little bit about your experience so far before we dive into this important topic.
I look forward to it every year, mostly to connect with school counselors from around the country, find my friends, my people I see every year, but also just learning.
I sat in two sessions yesterday, one about girl drama, which we know is fantastic.
prevalent in middle school, especially, and one on supporting undocumented students.
And both of them, I left with a huge aha moment, which is pretty powerful after you've been in the field for 20 years to still keep learning.

And you're actually also presenting the conference, the 2026 conference as well.
So we're talking about supporting our immigrant youth and the state of the youth right now in the world and the culture.
And I'm also presenting tomorrow about triaging student referrals, how we can better support our kids and have them get access to us.
