Halfway through the class, Mary Chenoweth, who is lady's maid to Sarah Trevelyan, wife of William Trevelyan, who owns the Trevelyan Deep Mining Company, and runs... owns and runs this, this whole village, has arrived very, uh, upset, very worried that she's going to potentially lose her position, and if she does so, then her future is uncertain, as is that of her mother, who she looks after.
Um, Fidelia has tried to calm her a little bit, but it seems like there's a little bit more to it, perhaps.
Mary has been told by her employer, William Trevelyan, that her services may no longer be required, and that Sarah, his wife, no longer needs her.
She's doubly concerned because Sarah hasn't been seen for the last few days.
The last time Mary spoke to her was, um, in the evening, on the previous Tuesday, when some of the diggers, the miners, the exploratory team, had a meeting with, uh, Mr. Trevelyan, which has been overheard by Sarah, and, uh, she seems quite, uh, interested in whatever it was they had to say.
But later, Mary has heard her arguing with her husband, who seems to have been very annoyed with her for spending so much time in the company of, uh, the, the workforce.
Because, of course, Sarah is well-loved among- amongst the villagers, and she often, um, walks around the village just to speak to people, to see how they are, to encourage them, and, um, get a feel for, uh, how, how they're finding life here at this model village.
She is very much the antithesis of William's hard-line, moralistic, um, attitude.
And so our investigators, Verity Carter, Amity Carter, Davey Farrell, and Eamonn Dempsey, have, um, maybe caught a little bit of this, this conversation, and, um, their interest has been raised because they all have, um, uh, connections with the Trevelyan family, with Mary, and with Sarah as well.
She is, as I say, well-loved in the village.
And here we find them now after, uh, an occurrence that has happened in, uh, in the art class.
One of the older members of the community, um, his name is Pengelly.
He, uh, he has fallen asleep whilst drawing his, uh, his, his, uh, his piece of art.
Um, now, it's not uncommon for people to, uh, to drift off in a moment of peace and calm, because everyone is pretty tired pretty much all the time.
Um, but he has, uh, woken with a start and calling out somebody's name and seems very, uh, agitated and upset.
And as he woke, he knocked his artwork to the floor, and what you've seen in his drawing is this strange, shadowy figure, a shadowy figure that seems somehow familiar to all of you, though you can't quite put your finger on exactly why.
And there is an ominous aspect to it, um, something, something that disturbs you a little.
You can't really say exactly what it is about it, but a sense of foreboding has clouded the atmosphere in the room.
And that is where we will rejoin our four investigators and see what they do next.
