American physicians are among the highest-paid doctors in the world. So by that logic, nobody should leave. And yet every year, physicians pack up their lives and move to Canada, New Zealand…
Ashwini BapatHostAmrik BojarskiHostBecause the fact of the matter is most US trained physicians pretty much graduate with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.
So if you've got real loans, if you've got a family counting on you, you've got to pay all that debt back.
And if you're that person in your family, you might have aging parents that you also need to take care of.
So all that is something to think about when we're thinking about compensation and what can happen when you move abroad.

Yeah, and I always want to be super transparent when you're thinking about a move abroad.

And when it comes to salary, the thing I want to be really upfront and clear about is that for most physicians when they leave the u.s to practice medicine basically any other country your salary in most cases will go down u.s doctors are paid really well compared to doctors in basically any other country and so for most physicians that move abroad of course there are exceptions but in general if you move abroad you're probably gonna take a pay cut that said i do think It's really hard to compare a U.S. physician salary to a salary abroad because I really don't think you're comparing apples to apples.
