My name's Susan, and I'm one of the hosts of this podcast where we talk to academics about their expertise, some fun facts, and the things you need to know about their amazing work.
As well as asking the questions you'd expect, I'll throw some random ones at our guest just to see what secrets I can reveal.
A senior lecturer at AUT's School of Science, Chris investigates how unique genetic variants in Māori and Pacific populations can influence immune function as well as responses to disease and medication.
In 2023, Chris received the prestigious Cranwell Medal for his science communication during the COVID-19 pandemic.
And in 2024, was awarded the Mana Tuapapa Future Leadership Fellowship by the Royal Society Te Aparangi.
Before moving into academia, Chris taught chemistry and biology at Tupou College in Tonga.
He's also a father of two and he seems to own a very large collection of beautiful, brightly coloured Pacific shirts.
