Redeeming the Time, preached on October 11, 2026

Well, what does that mean, the creeping influence of a corrupt age? Well, I remember a friend of mine when he was, uh, an undergrad went on some nice service trip somewhere, uh, during spring break, Habitat Humanity or, uh, w- For Humanity and some such, and he was walking with an old-- working with an older couple, and each one confided to him about the cat and they'd say, "You know, sir, we're really worried about the cat.

We think he's become the devil's cat." Well, I'm more of a dog person myself, but what does that mean, the devil's cat? "Well, when we first got him, he was white, and now he's black." You know, the devil.

And so my friend thought about how would that happen, and if it's true, this is really scary.

Well, working around the house, he found that they had a, a potbelly stove in the kitchen, and the flue wasn't operating properly, so the cat over time became covered with soot.

But they didn't really think that the devil got the cat until the cat went from fully white to fully black.

There were probably, I don't know, days, week, months where said, "Does the cat look different to you? It, it didn't always look like...

Does anybody have a Polaroid?" So we can get used to things getting worse and worse and worse and not wake up to it until it's too late.

Whereas if we're walking with care and we're vigilant, then we're going to, uh, you know, early detection is the best, et cetera, et cetera.

We're going to see the problem sooner rather than later because it's easier to uproot a weed than to chop down a tree.

What about he says the, the days are, are evil? Well, Irish melancholic that I am, I always get a little spring in my step when people talk about evil days, so I'm ready to take this on.

And, uh, Chrysostom warns that there are practices, cravings, and idolatries of the culture that are designed to draw disciples away from Christ.

It was true in the time of St. Paul, it was true in time of St. John Chrysostom, and it's true in our time as well, make no mistake.
