# How to Reduce the Mental Load at Home and Work Are you carrying the mental load for your entire family, home, and real estate business? You may have people helping you, but are you still the one remembering, planning, scheduling, and making sure everything gets done? Erin Glenn and Ruthie Graham talk about the invisible mental load women carry—and how to create more freedom at home and at work. Because sometimes you don't need more help. **You need to stop being the owner of everything.** ## 🤍 WHAT IS THE MENTAL LOAD? The mental load isn't just doing the laundry, buying groceries, or making appointments. It's remembering that the laundry needs to be done, noticing you're running out of groceries, keeping track of the kids' schedules, remembering client follow-ups, and carrying all those details in your head. Even when someone else completes the task, you may still be carrying the responsibility for making sure it happens. That's the difference between **helping** and **ownership**. ## 🤍 HELPING VS. OWNERSHIP If you ask someone to take the toilet paper to the bathroom, you're delegating a task. Ownership means someone else is responsible for the entire process—from noticing it's running low to purchasing and replacing it. ## 🤍 CREATE A FRICTION LIST One practical exercise from this conversation is creating a **friction list**. Write down the things that repeatedly frustrate you or take mental energy throughout your week. Household responsibilities, family schedules, meals, appointments, business administration, client follow-up, scheduling, and home maintenance. Then choose your top three and ask: **Who could own this?** Maybe it's your spouse, children, assistant, employee, or technology. And sometimes the answer is simply: **"I don't need to do this anymore."** ## 🤍 DELEGATION REQUIRES LETTING GO Delegation doesn't mean someone will do something exactly the way you would. They may do it differently, make mistakes, or need training—and that's okay. If you continue reminding, checking, correcting, and mentally managing every step, you haven't really released ownership. True delegation requires communication, trust, and room for someone else to learn. ## 🤍 YOU DON'T HAVE TO CARRY EVERYTHING Galatians 6 reminds us to carry one another's burdens, but that doesn't mean one person should carry everything. We see the same principle in Exodus 18, when Moses' father-in-law encouraged him to share responsibilities rather than carry them alone. Sometimes the answer isn't to become more productive. It's to **share the load.** ## 🤍 WHAT CAN YOU LET GO OF? Take a look at your home, calendar, business, and to-do list. Ask: **What am I actually responsible for? What can I delegate, simplify, or stop doing? Where am I holding on because I don't trust anyone else to do it?** You don't have to change everything at once. Start with three things. Identify the friction, choose who can own it, communicate expectations, and practice letting go. The goal isn't simply a cleaner house or a more organized business.
