Writer & maker LULU ALLISON chooses the five tracks she will meet in Hell! Lulu tells us about her latest novel, Beast, which takes the Faust myth and applies it to a modern day female rock musician…
Alex GaleHosthave you here, but why do you think you're here? What have you done to deserve being in Hell?
Probably being vastly over-opinionated... to the point that I've annoyed intense amounts of my friends and family over the years and being something of a pain in the ass, I expect.
And in fact, when I was reading your novel Beast, which is, as Alex said, based on the Foulsmiths, um and also involves a bit of rock and roll i thought oh this person this person has got to come on hellish um so can you tell us a little bit about beast just for the people at home who haven't listened who haven't read it yet give us just just the the elevator pitch what's beast about
yeah um well it started from the idea um i was i i was thinking of the Thomas Mann novel, Dr. Faustus, when Mann puts the Faust character as a musician, which is, you know, a change from the myth, but we have lots of musicians at the crossroads myths, you know, there's Robert Johnson, Paganini, there's dozens of them.
And I just suddenly had this thought that, you know, what if those musicians, because there was this really sort of snidey little biopic of Robert Johnson saying that, you know, he wanted to be rich and famous.
And so I thought, I started thinking about those kind of ideas of what success means and the kind of difference between wanting to make amazing music and be successful in a is that's what Beast came from.
