Episode 0x15: People, Not Records

And you think about it in like the greater scheme, okay, 30,000 records, sure.

But I mean, we're talking about, you know, really specific details associated with a individual that could have huge implications into anything, you know, their insurance, their employment, their ability to, you know, do so many different things.

So like the reasons for protecting that are obviously paramount, but yeah, it just seems to be like, oh, you know, it's just 30,000 records, no big deal.

Well, and that's the way people look at it.

But when we teach particularly technical people and developers, I have a background in development and IT.

And I'm allowed out in the wild to talk to people that aren't in that world.

But when we are teaching them, I tell them 30,000 records is 30,000 people.

And that could include you.

your mom, your grandma, you know, Uncle Fred, whatever.

It's people.

You don't, in healthcare, talk about records.

You talk about people.

And you're impacting people.

And making them not look at it as rows in a table or, you know, bits and bytes.

It is literally a person that you are impacting.

And a lot of times you'll see them kind of like Whoa, I never thought of it.

And it is, if you really look at ones where like the University of Vermont has, they've done a lot that they talked about.

They were hit severely in December 2020.

And they've done a lot of presentations.

But one of the areas they did a lot of presentations about were their oncology centers were hit.

And in another scenario, I was involved.

We were actually, one of our podcasts, I do the Help Me With HIPAA podcast, by the way.

And years ago, I mean, we've been doing it for over 10 years, 560 some episodes.

And we were discussing ransomware early in the game of ransomware.

And it was actively happening when we were recording.
