Today I want to talk about something a little bit controversial.
Um, and something that we should be considering and something that should be an open discussion in, in our market.
Is it time to rebrand the Fraser Coast? Um, that's the question to the Fraser Coast community.
you know, is it time to rebrand our region for a younger, stronger economy? I'm talking about more than just a logo or a tourism slogan.
I'm asking what sort of place we want to be in 10 or 20 years' time and who we can see here in the future.
So for decades, we've been known as a wonderful place to retire, you know, caravan capital of Australia, whale-washing capital, all these sort of things, but That has brought people and investment to a strong community, but have we become too good at telling the retirement story that we've forgotten to tell the story about what someone else can build here? So let's open this conversation up, and I'm sure I'm going to get some strong feedback from it, but the 2021 census put the median age at 51 compared to 38 across Queensland.
I do not raise as a criticism of older residents.
I raise it because a balanced community needs younger workers and families as well.
We need people to staff our hospitals, teach in our schools, run our businesses and support the services we rely on.
Um, If a 30-year-old nurse or a tradesperson or an engineer or a teacher looks at the Fraser Coast now, what do they see? Can they see a picture for a career, a home, a social life? Can our young people see the reason to stay, the reason to return to study, or the reason to move here in the first place when those jobs go up? Or do they just see...
a retirement village and if you look at a lot of the marketing comes out of this town You know, some of our over 55 villagers probably got some of the strongest marketing presenting what this town is, a great place to retire and a lifestyle and things like that.
But what did the young people see? You know, talk to the younger people, you know, your kids, why do they want to leave? You know, they don't see this as a young, vibrant place to come and build a career in.
