If you're thinking about planting a forest, where do you start? We know there's a lot more to afforestation than simply putting trees in the ground, so we'll take a thorough look at the application process, the environmental requirements and the safeguards that are now built into new forestry applications, including setbacks, environmental screening and measures designed to protect water biodiversity and local communities.
What kind of forest should you actually plant? Native woodland? Broad leaves? Mixed woodland? Predominantly conifers? There are a growing number of government-supported planting options available to Irish landowners.
So we'll look at how you make those choices, which trees suit which site and owner objectives, how different species can be combined and what's involved in getting a young forest successfully established.
So in this season, we'll explore what happens in the years after planting, particularly in native and broadleaf woodlands, and how relatively simple interventions can make a significant difference to biodiversity, timber quality, and the long-term potential of a forest.
