I grew up with a young, single mom, and the early years at home were tumultuous. Finances were tight, and things often felt unstable. From a very young age, I could eat as much as my grandfather…
As early as I can remember, I loved eating.
I was born, uh, forty-six years ago now to a mom who was sixteen when she conceived me, and she had run away from home to have me with her boyfriend and then moved back to New England, where I'm originally from, with me.
And I remember my dad leaving at about-- when I was about five.
So I do remember being sad about that, but I don't remember there really being any space to process that.
I lived below my grandparents.
That was really helpful to my mom and to myself, and I think that that was a big, um, support for me as I was growing older.
But in those early years, I really remember things feeling very tumultuous in the home.
My mom was very loving and provided a lot for me, but had boyfriends who were alcoholic and up and down.
Um, my grandparents both had alcoholic fathers and siblings, but they were the only two in their family who weren't active addicts in any way.
And then they had two, two daughters, my aunt and my mom.
So a smallish family, lots of addiction in the history.
My biological father had a problem with alcohol, but my mom was not an addict, really tried to care for me, um, and provided as much as she could, but was also a child, you know, sixteen to twenty-three raising me.
We lived in an apartment with my grandparents, as I said, so we lived below them.
And I remember just feeling a lot of fear as a younger child.
