If you’re trying to change your relationship with alcohol while your husband still drinks, you may wonder if quitting would be easier if he stopped too. In this episode of *Feel Good Alcohol-Free*…
Lindsay HennekeyHost
Let's talk about why his drinking can feel so hard in the first place because once you understand what is actually difficult about it, you can start figuring out what you need.

The first thing that I want you to think about is this: alcohol probably hasn't just been something your husband drinks.

You sit outside on a beautiful summer night or a beautiful fall night with a glass of wine.

It's just what happens, and these little rituals become part of a relationship.

So when you decide that you don't wanna drink anymore, you're not only changing what's in your glass, you're changing something very familiar, and familiar feels comfortable, even when the thing itself isn't working for you anymore.

And I think this is something that we can really underestimate when we start changing our relationship with alcohol because we think, "Why does this feel like such a big deal?" I used to say on repeat, "Why is this my thing?" Like, I would literally cry.

Why does this have to be my thing? And you also wanna simplify it to, I'm just not drinking wine.

Why is this such a big deal? But sometimes you're changing something that you and your partner have done together for 10, 15, 20-plus years.

And so of course that's going to feel weird, and of course it's gonna feel scary because you don't know what your relationship is going to be without alcohol.

It means that you might sit at dinner and think, this doesn't feel the same, or that does not, like...

Or how are we going to connect if I'm not drinking or if we're not doing it this way anymore? This does not mean that dinner without wine is worse.

And I also want you to be careful about the story that you tell yourself about what you're losing because this is really common.
