In this episode, Adam sits down with Dr. Yishai to challenge one of the biggest assumptions in entrepreneurship: that success automatically means you're on the right path. They explore why some…
Yishai BarkhordariGuestAdamHostSo do you-- to, to get aligned then, are you setting that up intentional- like some intention beforehand? Like is the alignment that says, "I'm gonna go start a company and I wanna work 90 hours a week and have no distractions, and I'm not gonna...
I'm gonna assume that I won't have a lot of relationships outside of work," et cetera, et cetera.
That's one version of alignment.
Or another one might be, "Hey, I only wanna work 50 or 60 hours a week and have a family and be a good father." Or like, how do you know you are aligned as a founder? And, and do you set that up properly for you, and then you're just, "Okay, I made a decision.
I'm a hopefully a rational adult.
I'm going..." Like I'll give you an example.
I, for myself and personally, I think about myself as a hopefully mostly rational individual and have thought like this is...
There are certain things I want to achieve and accomplish and how to do them in an actual way, all these different elements.
And I recognize that I give up some things by doing that, right? I recognize that I've given up probably some personal relationships or outside of work experiences over the fa- past 15 or 20 years because I wanted to dedicate myself to building a success- quote-unquote successful career.
Um-
...
but I'm okay with that.
Like that feels aligned to me because I made that decision a long time ago.
Is that alignment or am I misaligned or how does a founder do that today for themselves?

So my, my take usually, and if you and I were sitting and chatting about it, the, a question that I would really ask and, and want to understand deeply is, are there any parts of you that are regretful about it or wish that it would be or could be different? And something that I notice is there are times frequently people pit things against each other, like I-
Mm-hmm

... must choose either one or the other, when it's actually more often closer to truth that if I'm really clear about what my priorities are and how much of them belong in my life, then I can be intentional of around how much and what I put where.

So if we think about it this way, I heard this analogy and I really loved it.

Let's say everybody has, every day they wake up, they have $24 in their wallet and they need to figure out how they're gonna spend it, and they're gonna spend probably about six or eight of it, uh, sleeping.

The dollars are their hours, right? Um, so we spend hopefully, uh, you know, a decent amount sleeping, depends on how much you actually-
Gotta, gotta say-
... sleep's, sleep's critical.
