The Elton John Impact Awards supports Outright International for their work addressing human rights abuses and violations by advocating for changing laws and policies to help create better LGBTQ+…
I'm Maria Schaden.
I'm the Executive Director of Outright International, and we work for better LGBTIQ lives globally.
I have been with Outright for 11 years.
I've been the executive director for the last three years.
During my time at Outright for the last 11 years, I've seen a lot of progress in a lot of different countries around the world through our global work.
I've seen laws and policies change, decriminalization of same-sex relations, increased acceptance, marriage equality in some places.
Most of all, I've seen a global LGBTIQ movement grow fairly steadily.
So outright as an international organization, we can never parachute in and change something in a country on our own.
We always work in partnership with organizations in the country.
But our impact is to accelerate the pace of change through working with organizations based in that country through genuine partnerships.
And I think the impact, of course, has been the progress that we have seen in a lot of different places in pretty much every part of the world in that time period.
