[upbeat music] Let's start with hydration and the electrolyte industrial complex.
So I just opened my handy grocery store online ordering app, and I tried to count how many electrolyte products are available.
Now, mind you, we don't have a mega, super plus grocery store where I live.
We have the big H-E-B and the little H-E-B, and they're both on the same street.
We are actually finally getting a third.
We're gonna probably call it the new H-E-B for the next fifty years.
But anyways, I was looking at my app, and I just put in electrolyte, and I tried to count, but I had to stop after I hit one hundred.
There was everything from legitimate oral rehydration solutions for rehydrating after, like, the stomach bug to those little packs of basically salt, sugar, and food coloring that go for as much as twenty bucks for a box of twelve.
You know, they throw in some vitamins and some adaptogens.
Honestly, I'm not a hundred percent sure what adaptogens are.
I've seen this word cropping up more and more on labels, so I don't know.
I guess I'm gonna have to look it up and maybe do a podcast episode on it.
Anyway, they add some stuff to make it fancy, but you're basically just buying expensive salt in a fruit-flavored filler.
I mean, talk about drinking the Kool-Aid, like, literally, only it's salty, and it costs twenty bucks instead of five.
Now, I'm not trying to say that hydration isn't important.
If you're an endurance athlete, or if you work construction and you're out in the heat all day, or if you ate that diarrhea lettuce or came down with the dreaded cruise ship stomach bug, adding electrolytes to your water is a great idea.
But listen, Bethany, you just spent twenty minutes on the elliptical in an air-conditioned day spa before spending the next two hours scrolling Instagram during your mani-pedi.
You're gonna survive just fine without that pineapple coconut electrolyte refresher.
Or how about this one? Pickle juice hydration electrolyte shot.
Yes, that's a real thing.
Like, I can't even make this up.
It's the most absurd product I saw in my grocery store app.
So it really truly does not have to be this complicated.
Just drink some water.
Maybe you could, you know, add a squeeze of lime if you don't want it plain, but if you're eating food, you're getting your electrolytes.
