You're an interventional radiology resident, is that right? Correct, correct, PGY-4.

Our listeners that don't know that much about interventional radiology, tell us what an interventional radiologist is and what an interventional radiologist does.

Historically, interventional radiology, it was and kind of still is a subspecialty of diagnostic radiology.

So x-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs, CTs, interpreting those images and providing referring physicians with a recommendation on what to do based on imaging findings.

So we play a vital role on the inpatient and outpatient side as a radiologist in general.

One of the subspecialties that evolved over the years was procedural radiology or interventional radiology, which is basically a field that enables physicians to leverage their image interpretation expertise to perform really minimally invasive procedures.

And that can really range all the way from biopsying a lesion or an organ to diagnose some type of pathology, all the way up to doing really high-level complex embolization procedures and things like that, which we can obviously get into, but...

We work on every part of the body, head to toe, besides the brain and the heart in interventional radiology.

And we'll talk a little bit about pros and cons, but start by telling us, there's two pathways now for IR, right? And I think that's what you're alluding to.

Can you tell us about how, again, a medical student listening might go about becoming an interventional radiologist?
