In today's headlines, the expansion of data centers for artificial intelligence is putting a new spotlight on how much electricity Texas can supply.
Prime Data Center's campus, the size of a small warehouse south of Dallas-Love Field, has 20 megawatts of capacity, enough to power about 15,000 homes.
A planned CleanArc campus near Stemmons Freeway is more than 10 times larger at 245 megawatts.
These facilities need constant power, with about half of demand going to servers and much of the rest to cooling them, according to a US congressional report.
Encore had 271 gigawatts of data center requests to connect to its system in the first quarter of this year, far above its 33 gigawatts of peak capacity.
University of Texas at Austin professor Hao Zhu says that demand can affect communities through electricity prices, infrastructure costs, and fast power fluctuations that complicate grid management.
Turning to education, Bachman Lake Together's Family Center in northwest Dallas is marking 10 years serving families in the Bachman Lake neighborhood, with a public celebration set for November 14th.
The center opened in 2016 after funders and community groups identified a shortage of high-quality early learning options in the heavily immigrant and Latino neighborhood near Webb Chapel Road.
Bachman Lake Together says those opportunities have grown from about 126 to 980, and that 2,305 students have been prepared for kindergarten over the past decade.
Families also use the center for help navigating enrollment in Dallas ISD, the city's public school district, plus technology, mental health resources, and applications for public benefits.
Leaders say the work matters now because language barriers, economic uncertainty, and immigration-related concerns can keep some parents from seeking help.
In politics, the Dallas Morning News asked Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Tallarico about life beyond the campaign trail as voters consider the Senate contenders ahead of the November elections.
Paxton is the attorney general, and Tallarico is a state representative from Austin.
The clearest area of agreement was football.
Paxton also picked Dallas-Fort Worth as the Texas area with the best food, citing brisket, Tex-Mex, and chicken fried steak within a short drive.
Tallarico joked that he had already learned his lesson after saying Houston had the best food, so his answer this time was pass.
Their other answers split more sharply.
