Dirt Church Radio Trail Running
Jun 12, 2026 · 41 min · 10 segments
This week is a tribute to togetherness that running can bring us. Ali, Andrew, and Matt celebrate the experience of heading out for a run with your mates, be it a marathon relay, a Denny’s Marathon…
Look, before we start, we need to offer our most heartfelt condolences and give our massive love to Matua Ken Raurati.
He passed on the weekend and someone who is very special to the trail and ultramarathon community in the North Island and around the world, I guess, because so many people came down for Tarawira Ultramarathon.
We hosted the hospice memorial services together each year for the past few years.
And the way that he connects people to each other and to the land, the storytelling and just the way that he did it.
I hope that, you know, those ripples that he's created to everybody in our community, that we can kind of all carry a bit of the torch that he's given to us.
And he, you know, it's the thing, isn't it? When, I guess if you're not from here, you know, you see the guy handing out the, um, handing out the trophies at the, at the, at the front and then leading the, the poor hoodie.
So, you know, bringing the, um, bringing the mana hiri onto the marae and being part of that but it really goes so much deeper that sense of connection that sense of guardianship so yeah grateful to have spent a little bit of time with mātua Ken but yeah moi mai rā mātua moi mai rā And it's hard to follow that stuff up, right, and not feel a sense of sort of maudlin-ness or sadness, but as is, you know, endings are beginnings, so we should crack on and check in and get into the aid station.
