Dermot Bannon: A life shaped by detours

Okay, so that was all that stuff I read, but the career was architecture sitting there and Marion Square first stop.

That is quite, like Marion Square is very beautiful and very prestigious.

So talk to me, because you never forget that first

day, because you're terrified, first day in the job.

Everything, the sights, the sounds, the people you meet, what you're wearing.

Let's

go back.

And it was, you know, it really was that.

I remember the office, OK, and the office had sculpture on the stairs and it had proper artwork, like really modern pieces.

The furniture was all designed by the husband and wife architect that I worked for and I felt like it wasn't just a job and it wasn't just a desk.

The office, the office space where it was, was a community.

Does that make sense? Yes, yeah, absolutely.

And that I was now part of this.

I remember all my friends who wanted to meet me for lunches, and I used to delay, and I'd make them come into reception and wait for me, and then I'd come down the stairs.

I'd never meet them out on the street.

I'd say, no, just come on into the office.

I'll be two minutes.

I wasn't doing anything important, but I was wasting time so they could say, God, your office is really cool.

So you bring lunch in.

I did.

I did.

I did.

I used to get slagged for that because my dad used to make my lunch every day and everybody used to look at...

I'd take out my tinfoil and my whatever and they'd say, did dad make that for you? And I'd say, yes.

Did he? Yes.
