Is It OK To Be Mad At God? What 10 Years of My Dad's Cancer Taught Me

Okay, I did know that.

Born and went through the Depression, the Dust Bowl, hard times.

They were poor as dirt, and there was a lot of dirt back then.

They lived in a half dugout, didn't they?

Yeah, it started out in a half dugout and people don't know what that is.

It's just dug back inside of a bank or a cliff, you know, and not a whole lot to it.

And it's got dirt as the floor, dirt as the ceiling, dirt as the walls, you know.

And I remember daddy's sister ain't mind telling me one time, she said, I used to think we was really good people till we lived in that half dugout.

And then I thought we was poor.

You know, and it taught, I think it taught them lessons.

I want people to understand, because I think where your family or where your dad grew up and where your kind of family was in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, and that in itself is very formative.

When I lived in Oklahoma, I'm from Nevada.

I moved to Oklahoma.

We're married.

We're living where you grew up.

And I realized that this Dust Bowl mentality still exists in that area.

And what I mean is that people, whether they realize it or not, kind of have this tough grittiness to them, like just get in, do it, live simply, hard work.

get through hard times.

And I think generationally that has

moved through.

I hope so.

You know, my dad told me, he said, one time we were watching a movie on TV and his true grit was the name of it.

He said, we had that.

I said, what are you talking about? He said, we had true grit during the Dust Bowl.

We had it in our eyes.
