Well, on to the day as a whole, International Day of Peace.
How did it get its start, and what's it for?
The International Day of Peace was first promulgated by the United Nations in 1981.
It is celebrated every year to commit to global nonviolence, unity, and a culture of peace.
For our local two-day celebration, I have invited six other organizations to sponsor our events.
They are the Coalition for Healthy Democracy, the Homer Women of Action, the Homer Methodist Civic Engagement Group, the group Indivisible, our floating-leaf Buddhist Sangha, and the Home of Friends meeting, who is well represented by Ginger here today.
But I'm trying to corral a lot more enthusiasm, a lot more participation by inviting these other groups to maximize our message for peace.
Excellent.
How does that fit into the overall international Day of Peace celebration?
we may be the only chapter in Alaska who's celebrating International Day of Peace.
But it will be well-received and celebrated with many, many other Veterans of Peace chapters throughout the U.S.
What does a Day of Peace look like?
Well, we could begin with this moment right now with all of us sitting here with peaceful thoughts.
We need to find inner peace, and Ginger can probably speak to that a little bit later.
So after you get your head on straight, so to speak, then you can go forth and spread the message of joy, of inclusivity, of fairness.
