Jacques Cousteau said that people protect what they love, and that is the guiding vision of the Human Access Project, a Portland, Oregon organization that has radically and magnificently changed how Portlanders perceive and use the Willamette River, the river that runs through the heart of the city.

Once highly polluted and even shunned, the Willamette is now a place for boating and tubing and partying and swimming.

And that is largely because or significantly because the Human Access Project made Portlanders love their river.
