Jesus has gathered them to a mountain and they know that his resurrected body is about to ascend into heaven.
After 40 days of walking the streets and eating meals with them and talking, they know that Jesus is about to leave them once again.
And you have to think they've wondered, "How will I do this? Last time Jesus left us when he was dead for three days, we were afraid.
It was not good." But yet the last words that Jesus spoke to this group of disciples gave them an assurance that that would not happen again.
In Acts 1:8, it is recorded that Jesus told his disciples in that moment, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and all of Judea and Samaria and the ends of all of the Earth." Here we see that Jesus made a promise that he would send his Holy Spirit.
When Jesus was saying that in Acts 1:8, he pictured me and he pictured you as being recipients of the Holy Spirit.
And Jesus said, "You will receive." As amazing and powerful as the Holy Spirit is, our job is simply to receive.
