Reverse is when it's still all about that and I am powerless in face of that.
First year is that moment of, oh, wait a minute.
That's not the whole story.
I actually have some insight.
I am in my own nervous system entrapped in a habit energy.
I see it, gear one.
Gear two, I bring a willingness to go, okay, let me actually now learn how this is working.
how this system actually is functioning with this.
I study it.
We want gear two to go fast, but sometimes it takes a long time.
And in fact, our ultimate freedom, I think we are studying gear two with our life, our whole life.
And so it requires a certain kind of patience to be with it as we slowly, to use the Buddha's language, untangle the tangle.
and the more studying oh this strand goes here this strand goes here the more it slowly loosens the knot and then gear three the knot just falls apart and i have a different kind of freedom I don't even remember when Clara got us started on this, four weeks ago, something like that, who knows.
Since then, it has converged very closely with my study of , which is the relax and be aware.
I just think they're two different ways of appointing shining light right at that same place.
And so, you know, looking for all of the ways in my day, I can find these little knots of habit loops.
And it's been very fruitful.
And I want to share two, which I think are helpful, and share them in the context of You know, what Judson Brewer is talking about is investigation, gear one, gear two, gear three.
What Sayadaw U Tejani is talking about is bringing wise investigation, dhamma vichara, to it.
Use the wise mind and the wisdom.
Neither one of them put a lot of overt emphasis on compassion.
And the deeper I study with both of these models, that for me is the underpinning of the whole thing.
There's no way of making that initial turn without the courage of the heart.
And that's the part I really wanna bring forward today.
