Do you want to share with the audience how the body responds to stress normally and then its particular challenge when one has cancer? Definitely.
Now there are many studies of the negative impact of the way we respond emotionally to events.
And so psychologists have always talked about the fact that there are positive
We either have functional or dysfunctional emotions because you can get very angry, which is normally a negative emotion, that somebody has no food and you do something about it.
Well, then you responded functionally to a quote-unquote negative emotion.
And so an example of that would be of a patient that not so long ago told me when I was trying to soothe the fact that he had stage four cancer and that we're going to fight.
What do you mean? No, cancer is the best thing that ever happened to me.
So again, because of his spiritual fortitude, his reaction to this harshness of life against them with a cancer is the best thing that ever happened to me because it helped him realize the things that he was taking for granted earlier.
And now through cancer, he was able to appreciate his family, his wife, not work so much and so on and so forth.
So when you provide spiritual fortitude to a patient, he's going to respond emotionally in a functional way.
Why is this important? Because when you respond in a dysfunctional way, your immune system is depressed significantly.
There are studies that show that for every minute of anger, your immune system is going to be depressed for six hours, measurably.
On the flip side, for every minute of laughter, your immune system is boosted or improved significantly for 24 hours.
So the way we respond to life emotionally is has a lot to do with how good the immune system is going to work for you to keep you healthy or to help you regain your health when you lost it.
And that's why to us here at the Oasis of Hope, immune system is the main thing that we try to rebuild in our patients through emotional resources, spiritual resources, but also physical resources or medications or treatments.
