Improvised Weapons: The Complete Audiobook

Part one: Before you need the object.

Chapter one: Your environment is already equipped.

One mistake people make in self-defense training is starting with the object instead of the problem.

They ask, "What can I use as a weapon?" I prefer a different question.

What do I need this object to do? That single change opens the environment.

A chair does not have to become a striking tool to be useful.

It can become a moving fence.

A table does not need to hurt anyone.

It may force a person to go around instead of straight through.

A backpack can absorb contact and protect the torso.

A door can deny access.

A flashlight can identify what is happening and prevent you from reacting to the wrong thing.

An umbrella can give you an extra arm's length of space.

A heavy coat wrapped around the forearms can provide a layer of protection while you move away.

When I look at an unfamiliar room, I am not searching for a hidden arsenal.

I am noticing functions.

I want to know where I can leave, what can slow a person down, where I can move without being cornered, what objects can protect rather than merely injure, and what might become a liability if I grab it.

Five broad functions are worth remembering: shield, barrier, distance, distraction, and impact.

The first four are usually more important than the fifth.

A shield travels with you.

A backpack held between your body and a threat is a simple example.

A barrier changes the space itself.

A table, locked door, vehicle, counter, or row of chairs can force a person to change direction.

Distance gives you time, and time improves decisions.

A long, ordinary object can help preserve distance without requiring you to close in.
