The Stories We Tell Ourselves (and How They Keep Us from Zion

We as humans are story making machines.

We do it all the time, every day.

We all make up stories in our heads, especially when something triggers us or feels maybe hurtful.

We invent a reason why someone did or said what they did.

And most of the time, these stories aren't true.

But we mull them over.

We ruminate.

We stay up late replaying conversations.

And these made-up stories shape how we see people, how we treat them, and how connected or disconnected we feel.

So, funny story.

A few weeks ago, I got a text from my youngest son's primary teacher.

She asked if she could come over to talk to me.

And my mind instantly went to...

Oh my gosh.

My son has been terrible in his class.

Okay, he has ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder.

And he can be a handful at times.

And I just knew she wanted to come over and talk to me about his behavior or that maybe he was out of control or maybe too much for her.

And I was pretty convinced of this.

And I was actually pretty upset about it.

Like Mama Bear was coming out to defend this young kid.

wild kid.

But come to find out, she just wanted to get to know me.

And she was very sweet about it.

And she laughed and told me how much she loves my son and loves his energy and that she has grandkids just like him.
