Rethinking the way we school

But I wanted to step back a little to talk to you about the Scots X program, and, um, I guess a little, as I said in the intro, experimental, different way of approaching education and maybe what, what you sort of have seen about what we're getting right with our traditional mainstream schooling and what potential you see for doing things differently.

And two things I'd really love for you to speak to that I've heard you talk of before are the idea of relat- being relational and also real-world learning.

Yeah.

So, uh, it's a real privilege at a school like Scots to see, um, some of the ways in which we, we can do traditional schooling really well.

So I think we, um, we take for granted perhaps how schools have become much safer places, um, where a whole range of different students, um, can feel like they can be safe and belong.

Um-

Mm-hmm

... and there are broader, broader ways of being successful than may have traditionally been, um, been the case.

I think, um, the structure of school is something that, um, has, has a lot of merits to it, the, the predictability, um, and so forth, and the rituals that come with, um, the, the, the rhythms of school life.

Um, and I think the accumulated knowledge that we have in schools, um, is not something to, to be, um, uh, thought of lightly as well.

Mm.

Um, I think also just, you know, the dedication of teachers.

I have worked with some incredible teachers, um, who have a real depth of knowledge about the world, but also a depth of knowledge about how you form human beings that, um, that sort of sometimes, um, defies, um, description and-

... um, defies sort of standardization.

So, uh, an incredibly, you know, altruistic, servant-hearted people.

Mm-hmm.

And so, um, I think across our schools, um, we have wonderful teachers who are, um, really there to serve and make an impact, um, with, um, young people.

And, um, and I think the other thing that schools, uh, I think can do really well is have a shared culture and a shared sense of belonging through, through really shared, um, values.

And, um, lots of schools clarifying what we're aiming for-

... clarifying the kind of graduates you wanna produce and the values, um, the character traits that are essential to that is something that's been a really, a positive shift in schools recently.

Uh, at Scots, you know, we define that as, um, the quest for excellence-

... um, valuing our, our faith and tradition, and leadership through teams.
