Breaking 80 Over 50 A Golf Improvement Journey
Aug 12, 2026 · 33 min · 7 segments
Frank opens with candid frustration after a rough August and two disappointing rounds. He dissects advice from a Golf Smarter podcast and a Ryan Mouque video that both stress eliminating doubles and…
So there's a few different ways to do that, and those of you who've been with me for a bit know I like to read.
So I'll pick up a book.
But over this past week, I like to check out some other podcasts, and I tuned into the Golf Smarter podcast, and the host had an expert on who was talking about how to score better on the golf course.
What were things that mid to high handicap golfers need to focus on to shoot better scores? And the first thing he said was, "Eliminate the big numbers.
Keep doubles and triples off your scorecard." To which...
And, and I was listening to this.
I was by myself in the car driving, admittedly probably in a bit of a frustrated mood, and I'm going to apologize in advance because I haven't done this on the podcast before.
You can fast-forward for 10 seconds if you want if you've got kids in the car.
But hearing the expert say, "Keep the big numbers off the scorecard.
Eliminate doubles and triples," I just said out loud, "No shit." And I know that.
[laughs] I know that the way to shoot better scores, I'm never gonna be able to make enough birdies and eagles to overcome doubles and triples.
But just because I know it doesn't mean that I can do it.
And I, I listened to it for a little bit longer, really felt like it wasn't going anywhere, and tuned back out again.
But a few days later, came across a YouTube video, and I guess the, the title must have caught my eye.
But it was basically a video on how to make breaking 80 easy and the top five mistakes that you need to correct to get there.
I think it's an eight or nine-minute video.
I, I will put a link in the show notes to the video.
So if you'd like to watch it before I talk about it, you could stop here, go watch the video, and come back.
But the video was from Ryan Mouque, M-O-U-Q-U-E, and guess what his number one mistake was that you need to eliminate if you want to shoot scores in the 70s? Eliminate doubles and triples.
I was in a better mood while I was watching this, so I didn't say anything out loud.
But what I will give Ryan credit for was that I don't know if that should have even been the rule or one of his top five mistakes or what the next things we're focused on correcting.
So from there, he laid out some things to do to eliminate doubles and triples.
And so his, his number two mistake was always reaching for driver, meaning don't always reach for driver.
And he said that his rule is to hit it as far as you possibly can but keep it in play.
And for me, that's almost another no shit moment.
