Breaking 80 Over 50 A Golf Improvement Journey
Sep 9, 2026 · 34 min · 12 segments
It's Labor Day and Frank gets in three rounds over the three day weekend. Ball striking has improved just in time to battle the newly aerated greens at Oriole Golf Club. No two rounds of golf are ever…
And I'll give you one of those random thoughts to start with, which is that no two rounds of golf are the same.
Even if you have, and if you play enough golf, you shoot the same scores, and I've jokingly said I feel like I shoot 90 every week, that if I shot 30 on the front, I'd shoot 60 on the back.
But whatever your score is, if you play enough golf and you've shot 77 a bunch or 85 a bunch, no two rounds are the same.
And no round is a predictor of success.
a future round they just don't tie together and i guess that's taken me maybe i'm a little slow it's taken me a little while to figure that out that what goes on on the golf course today has no meaning to what happens on the golf course tomorrow.
So went out on Saturday morning, and quiet morning, it ended up just being myself and Jason.
We had a foursome in front of us, but We knew that.
I mean, we knew that going into it.
We were able to take our time and really play an enjoyable round of golf.
And on Saturday, and this has happened a few times now, went out and got off to a good start again.
So par on one, par on two, and it's fun in both cases.
So one is a par five, two is a par four, hit a green in regulation, two putts for par.
And I remember thinking after those first two holes, like, man, is this game easy if you hit fairways and greens? Third hole, par three, a little short of the green, chip and a putt, another par, hole four bogey, hole five par, so one over through five, bogey six, bogey seven, bogey eight, which still, it's okay, four over through eight, and then get to the ninth hole.
ninth hole as I've talked about is par five where the shot into the green and basically you're going back into the clubhouse but is is over water and hit a great drive really drove the ball I drove the ball really well all day on Saturday and even Jason remarked he's like man you really have found your groove with that driver and I can just see how comfortable you are on the T.
And, and I am, I finally trust that I'm going to hit a draw and I'm more confident, comfortable starting it down the right-hand side of the fairway and drawing it back towards the middle.
Does that mean I hit every fairway? No, but the shot shape has been very predictable.
And the worst thing that can happen when you decide, hey, I'm going to start it right and draw it left, is you get the double cross.
You start it right, you hit a big slice, and you hit a ball out of bounds.
same thing if you go the other way if you plan to play a fade and you think okay i'm going to start this one left the last thing you want is to hit a big pull hook and hit out of bounds but When the shot doesn't go well for me, the result is I hit it straight.
So straight or a draw are really, you know, been the only two things coming out of my driver, which is great.
So ninth hole, great drive.
Second shot's basically a layup to get in position to, to go for the green.
This one, I pulled a little left.
into the rough and just backing up while again didn't make pars on every hole i was hitting the ball so well so cleanly no fat shots no thin shots driver irons wedges everything everything felt really good to me wedge in my hand coming into the green on the ninth hole i was in some deep rough And truly, I'm not really sure what happened.
I don't know if I just didn't get through the rough.
