Why is the Braillists talking about keyboard shortcuts? The Braillists is a very small organisation and of course as the name suggests our mission is more Braille and so of course we do things like teaching people Braille but one of the other things that we also do is we look at Braille quite holistically and we look at things like how can Braille and technology come together so it's not a mutually exclusive thing.

It's not like I use technology so I don't use braille or I use braille so I don't use technology.

And so we talk a lot about things like braille displays and they connect to iPhones and iPads and laptops as well, and they quite often have keyboards built into them.

Some of them have QWERTY keyboards built into them, some of them have Braille keyboards built into them, but all of them, whether it's a QWERTY keyboard or a Braille keyboard, have keyboard commands that people need to learn and so that's why we're talking about keyboard shortcuts in this session so if you don't do anything to do with braille at all there's still something here for you because the techniques we're going to be talking about actually work for any keyboard you like whether it's a braille keyboard or a qwerty one or you know a bluetooth keyboard that's built into an ipad case you know all of this stuff will work if you're a braille display user absolute bonus because it'll also work with your braille display so hopefully that's cleared up that bit of confusion and explained how we got here.

My day job outside the brainless is actually doing assistive technology training so I come at this from the angle of the brainless person and also from the angle of the trainer.
