Send us Fan Mail Ashley and Emily chat all things The One by John Marrs. We, of course, go on tangents about the Podcast "The Con" and the TikTok…
Yes.
You read it first and told me I had to read it.
Okay, so here's the thing, the concept as we all know, 'cause you've read this, either that or you have some kind of sickness where you listen to us even though you haven't read the book.
The concept is basically that what if there is, like, one soulmate out there for you? Would you wanna get tested to find out, like, find your actual soul match? So Ashlee, what would you do in your current life, in your current situation? If this were a real thing, would you wanna know?
I feel like my answer is now fake and disingenuous, because the first time we talked about this, I said I would not wanna know because I feel pretty content in my day-to-day life and my situation, and I'm not sure I'd wanna rock that boat.
But then you, do you remember what you said to me?
I think I said...
No, you tell me.
Well, you basically said, "Wouldn't you want also your partner to have their best chance at having, like, what could be being with their match?" Like, "Wouldn't you want to see what your potential..." You said it much better than that, but it was kind of like, are you sure that you would want that? Because then are you kind of limiting yourself to what your life could look like?
I know.
It's really terrible, because how do you think about that and how do you say, "No, I wouldn't want to be with the perfect, perfect person for myself and have my husband be with the perfect person for him"? The problem is I'm living in la-la land, 'cause of course in my vision I'm like, wouldn't that be amazing if we could both have our partners and, like, live in a duplex and still be best friends [laughs] and maybe partners also, and, like, the kids would just live with us all.
It'd be so fun.
That's not reality.
So I think probably if I was actually faced with it, it would be a no right now for the same reason as you.
I have this really happy life with a really happy family.
I wouldn't wanna mess that up.
But that would be so hard.
Like, if they said there is technology, it tells you this is your pers- In the same breath, what if you took it and found out the person you're with is your person? It would give me I think a very healthy perspective on the fact that marriage is hard because I think reading this book, it's implied if you're matched with your perfect person, you'll have the perfect life, and this book is really like, well, no, that might not be how it works out.
[laughs]
I mean, the odds of that happening are essentially zero.
Right.
Actually matching with the person that you ended up with because what are the odds you met the person that you were soul matched with? Slim to none.
Do you think that people have one person out there who's for them? I-
Absolutely not.
Absolutely not.
Yes.
