Road underdogs in the Big 12 face an uphill battle, especially when conceding substantial yardage between the twenties, yet the ability to execute in high-leverage red-zone moments often separates contenders from pretenders. In this video, we analyze how head coach Rich Rodriguez guided the Mountaineers to a 24-20 upset over the Horned Frogs. Despite completing only seven passes on the afternoon, quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. accounted for three touchdowns, utilizing his dynamic rushing ability to exploit critical creases in the opposing front. Rich Rodriguez made aggressive fourth-down decisions in the second half, highlighted by a 14-play, 75-yard scoring march that punctuated the Mountaineers' offensive identity. While the Mountaineers surrendered over 200 more total yards than they gained, defensive adjustments created timely disruptions when backed against their goal line. Key sacks by Isaiah Patterson and Geimere Latimer II stalled scoring threats, culminating in Ben Cutter recovering a fumble forced inside the 15-yard line during the final minute. However, recurring secondary penalties, limited passing consistency, and upcoming tests against ranked opponents demonstrate that West Virginia still has structural hurdles to clear.
