Mile Marker 75 - Kevin Westmoreland on Family Business, Fleet Growth, and 100% Mack

What was the history of your dad's company?

It's a family tradition.

Westmoreland Truck started in 1952.

Very similar to my story.

His dad left him a single axle truck when he was 16.

Later on, he moved on to Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia, and purchased his first tandem dump truck when he was 20.

So I purchased my first tandem when I was 20.

So there's a picture on my wall when he was 20 with his first truck and me at 20 with my first truck.

So I don't know if you submitted that to the contest or not.

Was that you hanging off that yellow one? Was that your first truck?

No.

No, that was one of his trucks.

But

that was one that I'd driven for him.

Yeah.

What was one of the biggest lessons you learned when you were working with your dad?

The biggest lesson was, you know, learning how to work on the trucks and understanding the mechanic side of the trucks.

And then later on, driving the trucks.

And then I dispatched for 20 years for my dad, along with owning a few of my own trucks.

And that was my college education was dispatching the trucks.

Yeah.

Learning how to manage the people as a dispatcher.

and managing the drivers and how important it is to take care of your employees.

Completely get that.

Those lessons don't come easy.
