In 1858, Abraham Curry arrived in Eagle Valley and purchased land known as Eagle Ranch.
Natural warm springs were found there, and Curry established the Warm Springs Hotel.
A board of prison commissioners was created, land was leased, and on January 1, 1862, what would become Nevada State Prison was established.
As the early history was turbulent, fire destroyed the prison in 1867, taking many of its records with it.
This time, stone was quarried directly from the site, and the prisoners themselves provided some of the labour.
Some of the men imprisoned here physically helped construct the walls that confined them.
Now those walls would soon witness one of Nevada's most notorious prison escapes.
On September 17, 1871, a guard was attacked while locking prisoners inside their cells.
Lieutenant Governor Frank Denver and several guards were shot, and two people were killed.
Prisoners escaped into the surrounding landscape, and most were eventually recaptured.
Some reached California's Sierra Nevada, where another violent confrontation followed.
