Most deer hunters know how to spot a big rub, a giant scrape, or a heavily used trail—but some of the most important deer sign is the stuff hunters walk right past. In this episode of Before the…
I think when it comes to deer sign and interpreting deer sign in the woods, that's what separates some of the best deer hunters from guys that struggle year in and year out.
Because there's a difference between deer sign and useful deer sign in the woods, especially when we're talking about public land hunting.
Some of the most obvious sign in the deer woods could be weeks or months old, and you have to decipher on how old some of that stuff is or isn't.
And sometimes mature bucks don't leave a giant flashing sign saying, hunt here, hunt here, I'm here.
And the closer you get to bedding and security cover the more you have to learn about subtle cues in the deer woods.
And the bigger deer that you're after, the more you have to learn about subtle cues that these deer might be laying that aren't as obvious to everybody else.
And today, that's kind of what I wanna talk about, things that I've learned and I've noticed that might not look impressive, but can completely change where you might wanna set up in, the deer woods.
One of the best pieces of sign that you can see is that single mature buck track.
one track can sometimes tell you more than a hundred deer tracks you know a big track bike itself versus a trail covered in tracks that can be so important because these big bucks you know they don't always take the same route as all the other deer there's oftentimes a reason that they're big and that is because they've learned to you know, not do what everybody else is doing, or they they've skirted areas before certain, certain reasons.
And then once things start to get tense and their testosterone increases, which it's increasing all deer season, you know, outside of after, you know, after the rut starts to decrease, but yeah, As that tension increases, they want to get away from everybody other than those they're after.
Another thing that we have to think about with these big single tracks is direction of travel.
Getting a cue of, I can tell how old this is, and I can tell where this deer is going to can be a huge benefit.
