Dr. Daryl Kleinschmidt of Zinpro explains how chromium improves insulin sensitivity and energy use in dairy cows, leading to greater dry matter intake, better body weight maintenance, and about 5…
So when we look at the role of chromium, the, the big role that it plays is it increases insulin sensitivity.
So basically what that means when a, you know, cow consumes her TMR and she has, you know, a greater spike in glucose, you know, following her meal, chromium is gonna help clear that glucose much faster.
We also tend to increase dry matter intake with chromium, and that also leads to greater milk production as well.
So you bring up an interesting, uh, topic because we don't always think about glucose spikes in dairy cattle.
And really this is cross-species, right? When, when you have these spikes in glucose, what are you trying to do? You want to get it into the tissues that need it the most.
So, so it's increasing energy utilization is probably the simplest way to put it, right? When you increase the energy utilization and energy efficiency, it just makes the animal function that much better, and that's why you see these performance spikes is because of that increase in energy efficiency.
You know, for example, Zinpro Availa Chromium is our source of, of, uh, organic chromium.
And if you deliver it in the TMR starting in at least in the pre-fresh and feeding it throughout lactation, you're gonna ensure they always have the adequate source of this required nutrient.
And we also have, a- also in conjunction to that, we published a meta-analysis showing from a chromium source standpoint, uh, Availa Chromium is the best source on the market in the US.
So as you look at this, what type of conversations have you had with dairy producers during World Dairy Expo about this, you know, US announcement?
Most of the conversations has come around what, you know, what type of benefits we see on the farm, right? Not everyone's always interested in the metabolic mode of action.
They want to know, all right, what does this mean to the bottom line? If you look at our research, you're seeing about five pounds of additional energy corrected milk, and that's driven by the fact cows are, partially driven by the fact cows are consuming more dry matter.
